Hip Implant surgery increases risk of Blood Clots

The Journal of the American Medical Association has issued a troubling new statistic in relation to hip replacement surgeries. According to reports, 1 out of every 200 patients who use current preventive blood clot medications, will develop blood clots before leaving the hospital.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a blood clot that develops within a vein. This damaging condition blocks the flow of blood, cutting off the body’s supply to important organs. This can lead to serious conditions like deep vein Thrombosis (DVT), where the clot occurs deep within the body around the legs or the hip area. Another condition is  Pulmonary Embolism (PE), when arteries leading from the heart to the lungs becomes blocked. It can occur when a blood clot breaks away from its original location and travels to the lungs. Symptoms may include sharp chest pain, shortness of breath and coughing up blood.

In order to establish a correlation between VTE and patients who receive total or partial hip arthtroplasty (TPHA), conducted over 21,000 studies involving patients who received the procedure.

For those undergoing total or partial hip arthroplasty, the rates of incident for each condition are as follow:

  • 0.53% for symptomatic postoperative (VTE)
  • 0.14% for pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • and 0.26% for (DVT)

These findings are of great value to patients and physicians when considering the risks and benefits to hip replacement procedures. As a result of the findings, patients with high risks of developing blood clot disorders may reconsider the implementation of hip replacement surgeries.

If you are suffering from the side effects of a hip replacement surgery, consult an experienced hip replacement lawyer. The company may be liable for your injuries and, as a result, may be required to pay for damages under product liability.
