New Microscopic Bead Protein could Regenerate Spinal cord
Federal researchers from the Washington D.C. area are developing a synthetic protein that could repair spinal cord damage a person has sustained from injuries or trauma. The protein is converted into a microscopic bead form, and is injected into the wound to help repair damage that could lead to specific cells in the spinal column.
Developments in stem cell research have been paramount for advancements in treatment of spinal cord injuries. Although there is new treatments developed to prevent the spreading of damaged pathways that cause paralysis, there is no regenerative therapy, or treatment for repairing damaged cells.
Biologist Sally Temple is the head of the New York Neural Stem Cell Institute, at the University of Albany. She believes that the protein-bead injection treatment will indeed regenerate certain cells in the spinal column. Temple and her team dubbed the spiky protein “Sonic the Hedgehog”or SHH, because of its appearance.

Temple and her team first had the protein in a liquid form, but once injected into the wound, would quickly wash away, nullifying its effectiveness. To rectify this problem, they designed a microscopic carrier in the form of a bead. The structure of the bead slowly breaks down within the body, releasing the protein over time.
The SHH infused beads were tested on injured mice with astounding results. They noticed that the mice had more nerve growth and less tissue damage after receiving the injections. Most of the mice showed increased strength in its limbs, increased mobility, and improved coordination. The researches hope that they can continue to develop new methods for treating these injuries. Funding for spinal cord injuries and stem cell research has all but ceased, leaving hopes dwindling for patients with injuries that require rehabilitation.
