New Study links Hip Implants to Cancer
According to British Scientists at the Bristol University, recipients of hip implants face a possible increased risk of cancer. During a hip replacement surgery, the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. In question particularly is the metal-on-metal devices, that have been spawning product liability law suits across the globe. These suits mainly revolve around defective design and manufacturing flaws, but also deal with patients diagnosed with toxic blood poisoning, as a result from metal alloys from the components entering the body.
The scientists have brought forth findings after they discovered that patients who received the metal-on-metal implants, had abnormal cell changes in 1 out of 5 patients.

Whenever two metal surfaces with moving components touch, it causes friction. The friction causes shavings of the metals to break off, lodging particulates into the body and blood stream. This release of chromium and cobalt into the blood stream is how the toxic blood poisoning occurs in relation to hip implants. This type of friction occurs most frequently between the metal ball and cup, because that is where the most movement occurs.
This raises new concerns that the metal alloys could increase the risk of cancer, as well as putting major organs at risk. The kidney and the bladder are most susceptible to poisoning and organ failure.
Researches at the University across the pond conducted studies on 72 patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements. Out of the 72 patients, 17 had genetic damage to their organs, including 3 who developed cancer outright. The scientists concluded that any patients who developed damage to their DNA or cells are crucial, because these forms of mutations can often lead to cancer.
If you are suffering from the side effects of a hip replacement surgery, consult an experienced hip replacement lawyer. The company may be liable for your injuries and, as a result, may be required to pay for damages under product liability.
